Can you learn to be fashionable??

Up until this year ‘fashion’ as kind of passed me by as I have always found an excuse for looking like a bag lady.

2010 is going to be VERY different so my question to you is this – Can you learn to be fashionable???

I know very little about fashion and style. I couldn’t tell you what clothes shape would suit me and what colours to avoid.

“The dress must follow the body of a woman, not the body following the shape of the dress.”

Hubert de Givenchy

I can tell you what I like (once I have seen it) and who this is (I am not sure I could identify one of their designs) but im not sure that helps a lot.

Where do I start?
Is fashion and style something you can actually learn or you just know?
Does style come before fashion or fashion before style???

“Style is an expression of individualism mixed with charisma. Fashion is something that comes after style.” ~John Fairchild

Is it like art in the sense I appreciate and understand a painting but I can’t paint to save my life?
If I study Vogue like I would a textbook will I suddenly get it?
Where do I look to find designers and once I have found one I like do you have to be faithful??

Any help would be very very appreciated (as much as I love reading magazines they are quite expensive and Vogue and Elle are the extent of my local shops range, and some human(ish) interaction can only be a good thing)

Etsy Finds

I have spent many an hour over this holiday trawling etsy for nothing in particular and I thought I would share with you a few of my favourite finds.

I have ordered 2 pendants and some earring that should hopefully arrive very very soon.

I fell in love with this ring - It's going on my wish list.
I also think the product photography is fantastic - very atmospheric

This is now going to be my first point of call if i ever need a pattern for anything.
All patterns are $3 and are currently on 3 for 2 - Bargain

They have a fantastic range of Jewellery and i specifically want the Happy/Crappy day rings and The Wannabe Breakdancer Custom Name Necklace

I find everything in this shop super cute

(which could be becuase i know i am starting Weight Watchers on Wednesday so if i cant eat food i will wear it)

These ear-rings will be my next Jewellery purchase.

A Few Changes

I am changing things once again – I will hopefully one day find a blogging format/blog name/layout etc etc I am comfortable with.

I have decided that I am going to reintegrate both my diet and beauty blogs into one as they have such a huge impact on each other that it seems silly to have them separate.

When I am confident with my body my clothing purchases increase and when I am feeling low my makeup purchases increase.

I also find the supplements I take for my diet take there toll on my skin, which in turn impacts my makeup purchases.

My life really does revolve around makeup and diets doesn’t it!!!!! (I don’t think I am alone though)

The name is still a Mae West quote and I think it’s quite fitting for all the subjects I will be blogging about, because although I am trying to loose weight I am doing this for health reasons. I know I am never going to be ‘skinny’ so I am on the hunt for exercise etc. to accentuate my curves.

So… In summary all my diet/exercise/beauty posts will now be on one blog ( thats here but just wrote one post for both blogs)

I hope my diet followers will come over and join me there too as there is most definitely going to be a lot for you to read this year and that the followers of my beauty blog will get a more rounded picture of my life and join in with the dicussions on my diet posts too.

The woman speaks sense - Mae West

I recently came across this fantastic post on Oh Elles Blog about Mata Hari.

This inspired me to do a post about one of my role models, Mae West. What follows are a few of my favourite pictures and quotes so you can see why this woman is such an inspiration to me and how she has helped me come up with my new years resolutions for 2010

I would go into details of her life, but your probably not that interested (although it is extremely interesting) and you can find it all here on Wiki in detail if you want.

Though I wanted to repeat these facts, written Oct. 16, 1933, as my interest in her was initially piqued by the fact she was deemed to be too controversial for the era and a lot of this was to do with her size and body shape (I have read she was considered fat and unhealthy) and the way she used it.

'What uptight people objected to was that Mae West had the nerve to portray confident women who weren't afraid to use their sexual wiles to get what they wanted'

In vaudeville, Mae West developed her figure with an acrobatic act in which she lifted a 500-lb. weight, supported three 150-lb. male assistants.

Padded in most of her pictures. Mae West's real dimensions are: height 5 ft. 5 in., weight 120 lb., waist 26 in., hips 36 in., bust 36 in.

Cultivate your curves - they may be dangerous but they won't be avoided.

I always say, keep a diary and someday it'll keep you.

I never worry about diets. The only carrots that interest me are the number you get in a diamond.

I used to be Snow White, but I drifted.

Look your best - who said love is blind?

I like my clothes to be tight enough to show I'm a woman... but loose enough to show I'm a lady.

Roll on 2010

2009 has been a strange year for me with lots of ups and downs. I think it has probably been my busiest and most stressful year ever (toddler, work, depression etc etc.)

Because of this my aim for 2010 is simple…

To feel good about myself – Inside and Out  and acheive this in a calm, non stressful manner

Thats extremely broad and whilst I have broken it down into hundreds of smaller tasks in my head I will only list a few here.

I am going to:

  • Make an effort to wear some kind of makeup every day (confidence booster) and learn to apply it properly.
  • Continue to loose weight by making myself accountable ( graphs etc to be posted on blog and sidebars as I am combining blogs once again)
  • To run a race for charity this year (I am thinking the race for life)
  • Use the resources I have available to me to learn to deal with my depression and work related stress.
  • Learn to be organised in a non-stressful way. I never use a diary so I tend to fill my head up with appointments and to do lists. This is going to change as I have my 2010 diary and post it notes ready to be used so my head space can be used for important things.

And I also would like to:

  • Get my head around how to be fashionable (huge post to come on this)
  • Learn (some) Spanish and teach my daughter more than she has already learnt from Dora the Explorer
  • Declutter my house (and life) thoroughly and raise money in doing so by selling at least one thing a week for the year.

What are your new years resolutions??

"One should either be a work of art, or wear a work of art" Oscar Wilde

I have not quite got to the wearing a work of art yet ( thats one of my New Years resolutions to be posted), But I can now say I have become a piece of Art.

This is a portrait of me by the fantastic artist Angelique Moselle Price

You can visit her site here to buy originals or here to buy prints and t-shirts.
Whats your favourite piece???

Monday, 28 December 2009 haul and product review

After seeing this post by Mizzworthy I 'HAD' to have that lipgloss and as it was available from Zuneta ( a luxury online beauty boutique & magazine) where I had yet to shop but had only heard good things about I thought I would treat myself.

I did get slightly carried away though and this is what I ended up treating myself too....

and I soooooooooooo nearly purchased this
( I think there is probably only one celebrity whose endorsement that will tempt me and that happens to be Angelina Jolie)

'If its good enough for Angelina'

Hourglass Extreme Sheen Lipgloss in Siren £21 available here

I will start with that lipgloss. The colour is AMAZING. I own nothing like it, and I own a lot of red's. Its got a gorgeous bronzy/coppery/gold tint to it (in my opinion) and I think it goes just beautifully with some of my more natural mineral eyeshadows (swatches to come). I even had compliments from my father-in-law when I wore it on christmas day so that must make it good.

Price wise at £21 its not cheap and not in my normal budget but I can forgive that with this colour. The texture is gorgeous and lasted much better than I expected. The only issue I have is with the applicator (brush rather than wand) but I hopethink with practice I will get used to it.

Paul and Joe Eyegloss in 05 Brun onsale at £9 here

I started looking for eyeglosses after falling in love with the Chanel eye quartet that I mentioned here, that I am still yet to purchase.

I am very impressed with this Paul and Joe one, I think out of the all the products I purchased this may be the one that gets worn the most. The colour is very pretty and the application is much easier than I envisiaged and the packaging as with all Paul and Joe is gorgeous.

I don't think I would have purchased another colour at full price (£15) but at the current sale price I am tempted to try another colour.

Korres Colour Discovery Kit £28.88 here

Mascara 01 black_10.5mL e 0.36 Fl. Oz

Soft Pencil 01 black_1.13g e 0.04 Oz.
Soft Pencil 06 gold_1.13g e 0.04 Oz.
Gloss 33 nude_6mL e 0.20 Oz.
Shimmering Eye shadow 24 gold_1.8g e 0.06 Oz.

I purchased this purely for the Nude Gloss as I have been after a nude gloss for a while and this coulour really took my fancy.

To get 5 products for £28.88 this is by far the most affordable of my purchases. I have only tried the lipgloss and the gold eyepencil and i have to say i am very very impressed. The eyeliner lasted all day ( and looked beautiful with my Paul and Joe eye gloss) and is very pigmented and the lipgloss is as equally long lasting and pigmented. This is now in my new work bag, and will be being used daily.

As for my first experience purchasing from Zuneta- I cannot fault them at all.  The delivery time was excellent (especially considering the time of the year.  I was though told on the Monday it had been dispatched next day delivery and i did not receive it untill the Wednesday but i think that was as much the delivery companies fault) and everything was beautifully packaged and there were a few freebies included too which is always a bonus.

Twilight ( and Robert Pattison)

I am slightly behind the times with this but I watched Twilight for the first time last night.

Now whilst I didn’t quite get what all the fuss was about I do not feel that 90 minutes spent ogling Robert Pattison was time wasted, and for some reason I do feel somewhat compelled to watch the second movie though I may read the books first

Now to make this post vaguely makeup orientated, I posted a long time ago about the up and coming Twighlight makeup range.

This is now available for purchase from ASOS ( and maybe many more but I am writing this in 'word' waiting for my internet to try and fix itself so I cant do any research) and whilst I would like to try it I am loathe to spend money on products I know nothing about.

Not that I am looking for an excuse to buy more makeup but if anyone could point me in the direction of reviews, PR info or even given me first hand feedback it would be much appreciated.

Now back to Robert Pattison……….

and we can't forget Jackson Rathbone who plays Jasper can we

OOPS !!!!

I spend a lot (too much really) of time online searching for makeup and clothes to spend my (ever dwindling) money on.

Once of my recent diamond finds is a clothing brand called OOPS. The designs and prints are slightly ‘out there’ but that makes me like them even more.

First on my wishlist is one of these (super versatile) dresses:

In this fabric:

Closely followed by one of these  :

Even I would struggle not to look ‘Trendy’ in either of those (apologies for my use of the word trendy, my 2 year old (yes she is only 2) has decided she “will only wear trendy clothes” (her words) and whilst currently mums choice in clothes is sufficing I cannot see this lasting forever)

The designs are available to purchase online via here ( for very reasonable prices), if like me you cannot get to one of the boutiques that stock them.

What is your favourite print???

I am actually quite impressed by a Magazine

Namely the January Issue of Women’s Fitness.

I have yet to find a magazine I really like and actually want to read from cover to cover.

With fashion magazines this doesn’t matter as I just want to look at the pictures anyway (and if I read the stories and found out the prices of pieces I think my reaction may be detrimental to my health)

But with diet/health and fitness magazines, the written content is quite important to me (unless it’s a men’s health magazine).

Back to the point...I have read a few health/diet mag’s (including, Zest, Top Santé, Weight Watchers, Slim at Home, Rosemary Conley etc etc) but I have to say that this magazine ( and issue) is my favourite by far

My opinion however, is based purely on the one issue having never read it before and a choice in magazine is very personal so what I like you may not.

This magazine seems to contain exactly what I am looking for.

Loads of fitness info, broken down into small manageable (and sometimes humorous) chunks. All of a very readable length and on a wide enough range of exercise types etc to have something for everyone.

This specific issue includes articles on sprinting, posture improvement, exercises to make walking in high heels easier and boxing to name just a few.

And it includes small features on beauty, hair & makeup and diet that are essential, in any woman’s magazine (in my opinion) but they do not make up the bulk of the content which is important (I would buy a beauty magazine if I wanted one)

I may be treating myself to a subscription in the new year (if they have a good subscription gift), but in the mean time I may treat myself to one of their books

Has anyone tried them?

Anyone got any recommendations for other women’s exercise orientated magazines?

Mineral Makeup Goodies

I had packages from Aromaleigh and Sassy Minerals this week, and although I have yet to try the products I wanted to give them a mention as for International companies the shipping has been extremely quick and the customer service has been fantastic.

Full reviews (and poss swatches if camera decides to behave) to come.

How to entertain a 2 year old

In a vaguely makeup orientated way
with only loo rolls and glitter

Paigey had loads of fun making my new makeup brush holder and its much nicer/prettier/sparklier/special  than the empty tea bag tin I previously used

If this is Fat..........

Whilst looking for pics of Mae West I found an article entitled 'Sex Symbols of the Past(who would be considered "fat" today)' and other pages who all mentioned the following women as being Fat.

I would give my right arm too look like these women so I guess I am always going to be fat, but at least I will be healthy and in the words of Mae West
Cultivate your curves - they may be dangerous but they won't be avoided

The curve is more powerful than the sword

This woman spoke a lot of sense !!!

Wii Fit +

I fell out with with my mii on Monday.
She had obviously binged a lot over the week as shed had put on 4lbs.
and so I have not been on wii fit + all week as I obviously have no control over her.

Today though I relented and she redeemed herself (though i think most of the gain was water) and we are now back  on track and at the lowest weight at the lowest weight recorded on there (and i have 18 months worth of weights on there)

Even my daughter is asking to do 'exercising' now

I am not the biggest fan of milk becuase of what I have read. However, I will admit a lot of what I have read is produced by Peta or suchlike and therefore is obviously biased.

When trying to clear google reader last night i found this post on milk that contains so good links that give a more 'all-round' view

You can check the post here on Crank Fitness

I am not good at this blogging malarky

It's been nearly a week since I last posted - How rubbish is that.

So what have I been doing this week - Not a lot really. I have had the most awful week at work and I have just wanted to sleep once I get home.

As I have been soooooo stressed I have resorted back to my sleeping tablets to help me get the rest I needed but these always leave me feeling a bit strange the next day and by the evening I am so stresses again that I take some more. Its a horrid vicious cycle that I hope to break this weekend.

I have eaten rubbish and more rubbish too, though I have been good and tried to limit my snacking for the latter part of the week. I really don’t like chocolate so have hardly any in the house apart from the odd packet of dairy free buttons for my little girl but she will have to be deprived this week as I managed to consume them all at the beginning of the week.

On a positive side, I have a workout today and I know J will work me hard and I am going to be pampered at the hair dressers this afternoon which is a sure fire way to improve my mood.

I will be a better dieter and blogger from now on.

HJ Manicure Polishes

I am not a nail varnish connoisseur. I don’t find the whole experience of getting a manicure quite as relaxing as some, but I do have to have neat and tidy nails for work and find an on trend nail colour is a good way to funk up my boring work attire so…….

After reading various reviews I placed an order for 2 polishes from HJ Manicure (3 turned up as Helen very kindly sent me another one to play with). These turned up today (amazingly- after having only been ordered Tuesday) and here I am sat writing about them only 15 minutes after having unwrapped them.

First impressions......

I will go into more detail after I have shown you the colours I received.....
I only rec'd the 5ml sizes but couldn’t find pics of all the small bottles

I am very very into Greys at the moment so immediately had to have R8 and I thought a grown up gold for Christmas would be nice too. Helen sent me Tinsel which is gorgeous purple from the Festive Collection.

I now have my eye on 'Twinkle’ the festive collection too but its currently out of stock so will have to wait.

Now onto the important bit, why I am so impressed.

1. Super quick delivery (especially considering the time of year)

2. Bottle size and shape

I love the fact that the small sizes (5ml) of colour are available. I don’t tend to stick with one colour and find a bottle may be ruined before I have used even a quarter of it so at this price for this quality (£3.50) definitely value for money.

Onto the shape, I am rubbish at putting varnish on (as I am any other type of cosmetic product) so the ease of application is important to me and I think the shape of the lid is a big part of this and having recently purchased both Resist and Shine from L’Oreal and a Mavala mini this has become even more apparent as in both of their cases the awkward lid shapes make them difficult to hold steady, which is not the case with the HJ polishes

3. The Colours are fab.

I'm not really commenting on the colours themselves as that's very much personal choice, but I do think the colours are accurately depicted on the website. They look on your nails as the do in the bottle and I am sitting here with only 1 coat of both R8 and Champagne and if I was in a rush I would happily leave it like that.

4. The formulation.

For me the formulation is perfect, it dries with enough time to spare to clean up any mistakes but I also know I can chase after my daughter after only a few minutes without the risk of my nails smudging. This again is very much down to personal preference though.

I don’t think I can add much more apart from that they are available here

Oh and....

If you find me saying definitely a lot, I will apologise. My daughter is obsessed with Charlie and Lola at the minute so ever sentence must contain either 'Definitely' or 'Never Ever'

and......I am using images from the website because my camera is rubbish but I do think the colours are reflected accurately.

and..... why doesnt blogger have a spellcheck anymore
